Basic Handgun Safety

BASIC HANDGUN AND SAFETY CLASS
Feelings of intimidation re: learning to shoot are not unusual. Rest assured that by going through a Basic Handgun and Safety Class and gaining all the knowledge and training this class offers will sweep away virtually all fears and concerns regarding learning to shoot. Getting started in shooting creates "getting-started jitters." New shooters have a concern about instruction--fearing that they'll look incompetent in front of other shooters. I, as your instructor, want you, the student, to be as comfortable and at ease as possible. I applaud new shooters. My view is that if you are seeking instruction, you are wise...and soon you will be competent. There are no stupid questions in a class where the student is seeking training and follows the rules of preparation and safety.
I view the new student, the inexperienced shooter, as an eventual competent shooter. The new student, with my encouragement, will view herself/himself the same--eventually competent and skilled. So, if you are new to shooting, I encourage you to be gentle and patient with yourself. Have reasonable expectations of yourself. You will know how to shoot your firearm by the time your class has dismissed.
Learning to shoot is not lifesaving combat. So, there really isn't much to stress about. I invite you to come to the class with a student mindset. You do not have to be perfect! You are there to learn how to shoot safely, to learn to use your firearm. And to be willing to be a beginner.
The Basic Handgun and Safety Class is the best way to begin. The Basic Handgun and Safety Class is $150 per person (cash, check or money-order made out to Tulsa Red Castle Gun Club) for the 6 – 7 hour class. The Basic Handgun and Safety Class is a class for the individual who is brand new to shooting or has had little shooting experience. It is also a good class for someone who has some experience but who has not shot in some time. It is the class for one who desires to learn the basic skills of shooting. This group class is approximately 6 - 7 hours and covers all the fundamentals which include introduction to gun safety, education on semi-autos and revolvers, what you need to know regarding ammunition, how to load and unload your firearm safely, aiming, sight alignment, breath control, stance, grip, gun malfunctions, and if we have enough time, we’ll cover gun cleaning and various holsters on today’s market.
The first few hours of the Basic Handgun and Safety Class are class time. The last hour to hour and a half of the class will be shooting on the range. We take approximately 5 minute breaks about every hour and we take a short lunch break. You are welcome to bring a lunch, snacks and beverages to enjoy during class. We have a full kitchen complete with a microwave, coffee maker and refrigerator for your use.
After you take the Basic Handgun and Safety Class, I HIGHLY recommend the OK HANDGUN PERMIT Class, which I teach (also referred to as just the SDA Class), so you will understand and know the law regarding your right to own and/or carry a firearm.
The classes are held at the TRCGC Indoor Range. We have a very comfortable classroom and a terrific gun range. This said, the range (where we do the shooting), itself, is cold in winter (though “winter” is a relative term these days) and hot in the summer so dress accordingly. Please know that neither open-toed shoes nor low cut blouses are conducive to shooting as the brass flies when shooting and that brass is hot when ejected. We encourage ball caps to keep the brass off your face.
For the Basic Handgun &Safety Class you will need:
Your firearm (We do not permit students to bring the SCCY gun to our classes. Inform me, your instructor, what firearm you plan to bring to class.)
50 rounds of factory ammunition (no reloads)
A ball cap
Ear plugs and ear muffs & eye protection (if you wear glasses, those will do)
Your drinks and snacks. You can bring your lunch.
$150 for the Basic Handgun and Safety Class-payable by cash or check--made out to Tulsa Red Castle Gun Club.
If you’d like to purchase a Basic Handgun and Safety text book to take home, they are $20 cash. You are NOT required to purchase one, but I recommend it as it contains everything we will cover in class.
RANGE LOCATION: The Indoor Range is located at 1115 South Zunis, Tulsa. This is just west of Lewis and just south of 11th Street.
